Why Do Carbon Emissions Matter?
Carbon emissions refer to carbon dioxide gas that is released into the Earth’s atmosphere due to respiration, fuel combustion, and a variety of industrial processes. The gas plays a key role in helping trap natural heat within the surface of the Earth to create an environment that is conducive for humans, animals, plants, and various living organisms to thrive.
Although carbon dioxide is necessary, it can be harmful if it reaches abnormal levels. In high quantities, carbon dioxide can trap excess heat, causing a general increase in temperatures. This is what we know as global warming.
To understand further why carbon emissions are considered a major concern, we will take a look at how excess levels can affect the environment and how we can contribute to safety with the choices we make. We also discuss how EcoBlend Bioheat® Heating Oil can help reduce carbon emissions.
Why Should We Be Concerned About Carbon Emissions?
Table of Contents
Carbon emission will happen because it is normal and a necessary part of many processes. However, the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) 1
and different environmental conservation bodies that monitor and set the annual carbon emissions budget are warning that carbon emissions are consistently going over the set limit. This could lead to global warming and ultimately affect the global climate.
In an attempt to regulate carbon levels, the federal government creates awareness on how excess levels of emissions can affect us in a negative way. The government also encourages certain habits, including:
- Planting trees
- Using modes of transport that are eco-friendly, including walking and biking
- Implementing renewable energy sources
- Using energy-efficient appliances and fixtures in the home
- Recycling
By 2020, the United States has reduced its carbon emission by 7%. This was reported by the Carbon Cycle Science Program. 2 The reduction was the result of a significant reduction of travel due to restrictions that were implemented due to COVID-19. As such, it is likely that U.S. emissions will increase once again once travel and the economy go back to pre-COVID levels.
Carbon Emissions Impact
There are many disadvantages associated with carbon dioxide emissions. When we begin adopting eco-friendly practices, we minimize these emissions. High levels of carbon emissions can cause a number of problems, such as:
Extreme Weather
Global warming can lead to extreme weather changes. If the Earth’s surface heats up, the evaporation rate of water increases, which can lead to heavy rains in wet places. In dry areas, on the other hand, dry areas will experience increased and prolonged droughts. This is because whatever moisture is present will evaporate quickly. The NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) says that extreme conditions such as drought, floods, and storms are likely going to worsen because of global warming.3
Respiratory Diseases
Of course, carbon dioxide is not the only factor that increases the risk of respiratory diseases. However, when high temperatures lead to environmental pollution, such as in the case when the ozone at ground level increases, this can lead to lung inflammation and lung tissue damage.
The AAFA (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America)4 states that ozone at ground level puts people who suffer from pre-existing respiratory diseases at high risk. This is a result of industrial emissions and chemical reactions. With increased carbon emissions, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere could also rise, displacing oxygen which could cause fatigue and headaches.
Food Supply Disruptions
Global warming will hit the agricultural sector hard. In fact, the U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change shares that climate change is the leading reason why worldwide hunger exists.
Because temperature rise affects the yields for crops and livestock, the resulting volume of produce will cause massive disruptions in the world’s supply of agricultural products, especially food. Carbon emissions can also affect the nutritional value of food, which will lead to a decrease in the overall health of the population.
Increased Wildfires
According to the NIFC (National Interagency Fire Center), the number of wildfires in the U.S. has increased. From January to February 2021, the country has already dealt with over 2,900 fires.
Although human activities such as accidents and arson are the reason for most of these wildfires, high temperatures have also made it easier for fires to spread more quickly. Dry conditions due to the greenhouse effect become severe enough to make it very difficult to stop wildfires.
How Bioheat® Heating Oil Can Help in Carbon Emissions Reduction
Bioheat® heating oil is a type of liquid renewable fuel that is produced from animal and plant fats and oils. These are processed to form biodiesel, a product that is combined with ULSHO (ultra-low sulfur heating oil). The extremely low levels of sulfur in the blend lower the toxicity of heating oil significantly, which makes it quite safe for use at home.
Bioheat® heating oil is a renewable, eco-friendly, and sustainable heating oil because of its source. It produces low carbon, so it is the ideal fuel option to help reduce carbon emissions. It is both a safe and environmentally friendly heating oil option for residential use.
Bioheat® heating oil is also compatible with most existing heating equipment. If you want to start decreasing your carbon footprint immediately, this is an excellent heating oil to use. Using Bioheat® heating oil essentially lets you do your part in helping the planet.
Hart Home Comfort takes issues that affect the environment seriously. This is why we have been providing EcoBlend Bioheat® heating oil to our clients as a better option. EcoBlend Bioheat® fuel is a 20-percent biodiesel blend that we have been delivering since 2007. We have been giving this option to our clients way before the Providence Resolution was even implemented. The resolution is meant to help achieve a 100% use of liquid renewable fuel by the heating industry by 2050.
Since 2007, Hart Home Comfort has been reducing 69,671,279 pounds of carbon emissions from the environment.
The Future Of EcoBlend Bioheat® Heating Oil
Currently, our EcoBlend Bioheat® heating oil is a 20-percent blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil and biodiesel. In our quest to find the best eco-friendly solutions, we are boosting our efforts to start offering a 50-percent blend (b50) soon! The target year for the industry is 2030 but our goal is to be able to beat this deadline.
With b50 levels, we can offer EcoBlend Bioheat® heating oil that emits even less carbon compared to electricity or natural gas.5
